DAN WILKINS JOINS THE 20 YEAR CLUB

There is a new member of the 20 Year Club (our 25th member to be exact). Actually, he has been a 20 year man for some time when his career is looked at in total.

Dan Wilkins has been here for 20 years continuously since February 10th, 1992. BUT, he had worked here for most of the 1980s. This award recognizes the current stint, but we should not overlook his previous efforts.

In the time that Dan has been here he has been a machine operator, a foreman, and a technician, with most of his time spent on our 3rd shift. He has a wealth of technical experience and is always good for a hilarious story from his years of employment here.

Prior to joining us in the 1980s, he had worked at Harrison Radiator and Tonawanda Electric Steel Casting Company. Between CPI gigs he worked at Sadlo Lumber in the mill.

20 years is an incredible amount of time, and, to make you appreciate how long ago February of 1992 was, consider the following facts and happenings from that month:

RAY CONFER'S MOST FAMOUS INVENTION: THE LIVING HINGE

Sunday, February 12th marked the birth date of the late Ray Confer, founder of Confer Plastics. He would have been 90 on Sunday. In honor of his life, let’s look at his most ubiquitous invention: the living hinge.

Ray designed the living hinge in the early 1960s as a means to more efficiently make plastic tool cases. The addition of metal hinges always added cost to the final product due to materials and assembly. So, Ray came up with an ingenious way to eliminate the metal hinges by molding a plastic hinge in process as a part of the case itself, rather than as an add on.

Basically, the living hinge is a thin section of plastic that connects two halves of a part to keep them together and allow the part to be opened and closed over and over again. You can see the hinge in this photo that shows a SCUBA gear case in its open state.

The living hinge is a part of our everyday lives. It can be found in toolboxes, tackle boxes, and those plastic clamshells that are used as takeout containers and storage boxes for produce.

Ray’s invention – one created out of necessity and ingenuity – is everywhere.

INTRODUCING THE UNIVERSAL SPA CORNER

MODIFICATION TO 7200 GATE

Our popular 7200 ladder received an optional gate a couple of years ago to satisfy building codes even more than the product already had with its unique tambour (roll-up) feature.

This season we’ve improved the system even more. Now, some building inspectors in the Northeast want self-closing gates, so we’ve added a kit that pulls the gate shut once the user lets go of the gate. This kit will be packed with all gates shipped this year and it will be available as an after-market kit for 7200 gates sold in previous years.

POOL ENTRY SYSTEM IS MODIFIED

Our popular Pool Entry System, the heavy-duty staircase for above-ground pools, has received a major face lift, its first since the product was introduced in January of 1997.

Many building inspectors have changed the specifications for swimming pools in recent years and this modification addresses that: Long gone are the circular handholds that could be found the length of the wall panel. Those holes have been filled in and the upper railing is now fully enclosed.

DAVE BASSLER RETIRING

At the end of this month, Dave Bassler will be retiring from Confer Plastics and the blow-molding industry.

The 72-year old has worked at CPI for the past decade, after having worked for the company in the early 1980s before spending almost 20 years with Airlock Plastics, another blow molder which, by the way, had been started by CPI founder Ray Confer.

Dave has been a real asset to Confer Plastics, handling many an electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical repair in the plant while overseeing the parts ordering - and outside repairs - for all of our molding machines and auxiliary equipment.

We will miss Dave's knowledge, experience and, above all, Dave himself. He's always been a great coworker and friend.

We wish him well in retirement.

Confer Plastics and Adecco teamed to conduct a food drive to benefit the Food Bank of WNY.

With the holidays approaching Confer Plastics and Adecco wanted to give back to the local community especially as times are still tough financially for so many across the nation. In Niagara County alone the Food Bank of WNY delivers more than 1.2 million pounds of food annually to assist more than 10,000 people per month. Out of those served by the Food Bank, 39% are children and 11% are seniors.

A collection bin was set-up at the Confer Plastics factory and our workforce contributed two 55-gallon drums filled with non-perishable food items!!

SECOND SHIFT DELAYED ON NOVEMBER 10th

PETE MILLER JOINS THE 20 YEAR CLUB

On September 18th, Pete Miller became the 24th member of Confer Plastics’ Twenty Year Club. Pete started here as a young buck of 19 years of age. He worked on all 3 shifts as a machine operator before making the move to secondaries where he spent a couple of years finishing voting booths for Sequoia. That was not an easy task as each console needed more than 90 holes drilled and over 70 inserts installed.

His handiwork and background in automotive mechanics showed that he had what it takes for set-up, where he was tutored by Carl Hartzfeld, John Cleary and others. He quickly learned - and mastered – the tricks of the trade, learning everything about hydraulics, electrical and blow molding.

About 7 years ago he assumed the responsibility of plant manager, capitalizing on his knowledge of everything production and process related and his ability to work with people to make the most out of his, their, and our potential. He oversees everything on the production floor (personnel, process, and equipment) and has maintained that role at CPI longer than anyone before him.

20 years is a long time. How long ago was it? Look at what happened in September 1991:

• The Buffalo Bills began their second Super Bowl season with Jim Kelly throwing 6 TDs against the Steelers
• The Soviet Union dissolved
• A grease fire broke out at Imperial Foods in North Carolina, killing 25
• Deion Sanders was playing baseball with the Braves

• REM was the big winner at the MTV music awards
• “Commish” was the big TV debut of the month

Three 5-minute snippets about CPI ran during the 2 hour newscast.

Kevin and our own Cliff Hoover educated the viewers about blow molding and introduced them to our wide variety of custom and proprietary products. Viewers were also able to see two of our 75-pound blow molding machines in operation.

NO PARKING FOR THUNDER ON NIAGARA

As much as we'd like to be a good neighbor, parking in the Confer Plastics lot is not allowed for this weekend's Thunder On Niagara jet boat race at the adjoining Gratwick Park. Our lot is closed to those who do not work here due to liability and risk and production taking place this weekend. Also, parking on the roadway coming into our property is limited to the south shoulder as we need the roadway open for tractor trailers and our workforce.

NATIONAL GRID & CONFER PLASTICS TEAM-UP ON LIGHTING PROJECT

Confer Plastics is in the process of replacing the lighting at our facility which last saw an upgrade in the late-1990s. The project began last week and the energy-efficient lights have already had a huge impact: Our workforce came back from our annual plant shutdown week to a very bright production facility. It was like walking into a new factory!

Further results will appear soon as markedly-lower electrical bills.

This project would not be possible without the financial assistance of our electrical provider, National Grid. The power company paid for one half of the project!

THERESA RETIRES AFTER 32 + YEARS

Make sure you say “good bye” to Theresa Fronczak this week.

Friday will be her last day at the plant after 32 years of service to Confer Plastics and our customers. She may be back for a few days in late August to lend a hand, but for all intents and purposes she’ll be joining the ranks of retirement at week’s end. She’s looking forward to spending quality time with her army of cute grandkids.

Theresa started at Confer Plastics on March 22nd, 1979 back when we operated out of the old Roblin Steel facility off of East Ave in North Tonawanda (and Bob Confer was just over 4 years old).

She started as a machine operator (she still has her knife!) and soon moved to the front office where she’s been ever since. Her duties consist of preparing a variety of correspondence for our custom clients, ranging from letters to reports to quotes to invoices. She has been an important part of our administrative/customer relations functions -- and the Confer extended family -- and she will be missed.

FORSEY JOINS 20 YEAR CLUB

The Twenty Year Club welcomed its 23rd member this Monday when Annette Forsey celebrated two decades of employment at Confer Plastics.

The LaSalle High graduate, who now calls North Tonawanda home, started working here on July 25th, 1991 after stints at Solar Drape in Tonawanda and Finishing Enterprises at Wulitzer Park in NT. To put that era into perspective, her wage at Finishing Enterprises when she left there was $3.85.

Annette was a machine operator for a while before making the permanent move to the secondaries department where since 1992 she has packed swimming pool ladder hardware and done other tasks. In a typical year, she and her partner in crime Vicki might pack between 50,000 and 60,000 hardware bags. So, over her 20 years, she helped pack nearly 1 million of them!

How long ago was July of 1991? Ponder this glimpse at the history of that month:

• Serial killer Jeffery Dahmer was arrested after the remains of 11 men and boys were found in his apartment
• Mike Tyson was arrested for raping a Miss Black America Contestant
• The United States and Soviet Union signed the first ever START Treaty, limiting nuclear arms

CONFER PLASTICS' SHUTDOWN WEEK

Confer Plastics will be closed from Saturday, August 6th through Sunday, August 14th. This is our annual shutdown week & plant-wide vacation.

The scheduling of this shutdown gives our coworkers some time to rest and enjoy the summer with their families. It also gives us time to focus on preventive maintenance of our blow molding machines and electrical infrastructure.

No manufacturing or assembly will be occurring during that week. There will, though, be a skeleton crew on site to handle shipping and receiving as well as some basic business functions over abbreviated hours (9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.).

CPI TO LAUNCH SPA CABINET PROGRAM

One of the biggest obstacles to spa manufacturers for getting into blow molded cabinetry (which is a higher-quality, maintenance-free alternative to extruded and wooden panels) is the cost associated with investing in their own molds.

Up until now, no one offered a blow-molded spa cabinet to anyone in the industry hoping to enter the market.

Confer Plastics is changing that and is sure to shake up -- even redefine -- the industry. On July 1st we will be launching a hot tub panel/corner program whereby we will be able to provide those critical components to OEMs.

CONFER PLASTICS HIRING SET-UP TECHNICIAN

Confer Plastics, Inc. has been growing by leaps and bounds over the past 2 years. With such growth comes the need for more technical personnel. CPI is now accepting applications for the position of set-up technician.

The set-up technician installs the molds and tooling into our 14 blow molding machines. After doing so, the technician must then "tune-in" the machine and ensure that it is creating quality product that meets specifications. Other jobs include general plant maintenance and repair tasks. Knowledge of blow molding processes; ability to perform manual labor; dexterity with, and knowledge of, tools; electrical/hydraulic experience are all preferred, as is a minimum of 3 years experience as a set-up or process technician in a plastics shop.

Positions are Full Time Permanent, Monday to Friday on our 1st Shift, 40+/hrs per Week.

Taking a proactive approach to workplace safety, every 2 years since the late 1990s Confer Plastics has participated in the Onsite Consultation program provided by the New York State Department of Labor. The company has began yet another campaign with this important program and will be working with the State over the next few months.

According to the DOL website the On-Site Consultation Program is a free business resource of the New York State Department of Labor Division of Safety and Health. Funding is provided by the US Department of Labor and NYS Department of Labor to help employers provide a safe and healthful workplace for their employees by offering professional occupational safety and health assistance.

LEADERSHIP NIAGARA TOURS CPI

More than two-dozen members of this year's Leadership Niagara class toured Confer Plastics on March 17th as a part of their Small Business Day. The participants were able to walk the factory floor and see a variety of products being made. For most, this was their first look at the inner workings of a manufacturing environment. They also heard from vice-president Bob Confer who talked about the struggles and joys of running a business.

This was just one stop on their full day of small business activities. They also heard from Rob Albert of Impressive Imprints who spoke about entrepreneurship, Annette Tomlin from First Niagara Bank who addressed why businesses fail, and Frank Budwey of Budwey Markets who discussed the importance of strategic planning.

This Friday set-up technician Jim Miller joins the coveted 20 Year Club, becoming the 22nd person to work at CPI for two decades.

He spent a lot of time in shipping before joining the set-up crew about 12 years ago. He's a hardworking & talented fellow when it comes to putting molds & tooling into machines and tuning them in.

Prior to coming here he worked at Kwik Stop in Niagara Falls as a clerk and in shipping & receiving at the Sears in the Summit Mall after spending some time at Niagara University. It was so long ago that Kwik Stop paid only $4.50/hour.

CONFER TO SPEAK AT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

Confer Plastics vice-president Bob Confer is well-known locally as a weekly opinion columnist for the Greater Niagara Newspapers and is known in some circles nationally with his small government columns that run in the New American.

He will be talking about how to be involved in civics and activism at a leadership conference to be held at his alma mater, the State University of New York's College at Brockport.

The event will be held on February 27th and will feature presentations from some of the College's alumni in celebration of the school's 175th anniversary.

Generations X and Y are facing some interesting times. ORIE CORNETT: TWENTY YEARS AT CPI

On January 9th we will have a new addition to our Twenty Year Club…Orie Cornett.

Orie is the 21st member of this select group. His remarkable accomplishment – two decades of service to one company – is very much appreciated by the Confers. Orie has always had the best interest of the company, our customers and our coworkers in mind. He goes above and beyond to make sure everything is perfect for everyone.

Prior to coming to Confer Plastics, Orie had an impressive 23 year career in the United States Army. He attained the rank of Master Sergeant and oversaw the operations of a 90-man tank company in Germany. He received a Meritorious Service Medal and 3 Army Commendation Medals.

Orie, 63, spent years as our third shift foreman and is now our first shift foremen. He is well-liked by all and is chock full of “Orie-isms”, humorous sayings he picked up and developed in his boyhood home of Kentucky. He lives in North Tonawanda and he and his wife have 4 children.

GRAY, BOTTOM JOIN 20-YEAR CLUB

We have two new additions to our Twenty Year Club! Jean Gray and Dave Bottom both started working at Confer Plastics on the same day, December 10th, 1990. They become the 19th and 20th members of this select group.

We really appreciate their 2 decades of service with CPI. Think about that…20 years; nowadays, most marriages don’t last that long. It means a lot to us!

Jean Gray came here after having worked for 7 years at Airlock Plastics in Tonawanda. Looking at this place as a family environment, she’s had 2 of her sisters and a nephew work here and she married one of her coworkers, Dave Gray. Her daughter, Christine, works in our inventory department.

Jean has spent time on all three shifts seeing stints as quality inspector and material handler. She’s currently a machine operator on our first shift.

Dave Bottom basically came here fresh out of high school, having worked at Burger King and Frontier Foundries after graduating in ‘90. Dave was here when Bob Confer, as a 19-year-old, started at the plant in 1993. He was one of the guys who first trained Bob as a machine operator and he did a great job. He has been a machine operator, systems cleaner and is currently a material handler on the 3rd shift.

How long ago was 1990? Here’s what happened that year…

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE RECOGNIZES CONFER PLASTICS

Last night the Chamber of Commerce of the Tonawandas had their annual dinner and awards ceremony where Confer Plastics was recognized as the business of the year. It's a great honor, one that we really appreciate and it's a testament to the people we work for and work with.

Bob Confer and John White were the toast of the Twin Cities Wednesday night.

The two men were honored as part of the Chamber of Commerce of the Tonawandas’ 72nd annual meeting and installation of officers. The event was hosted at Richard’s on Main.

White was honored as the organization’s 2010 Citizen of the Year for his work with numerous youth organizations, while North Tonawanda’s Confer Plastics was recognized as 2010 Business of the Year.

Both men were quite humbled to receive the recognition. “You and I are the two wealthiest men in this room,” White said of he and Confer.

The Chamber’s annual dinner awards a Citizen of the Year and Business of the Year. The citizen award dates back to 1956, while the business award began in 1985. Each year, the Chamber solicits nominations for both categories. “We’re very proud of both of our honorees this year,” Executive Director Joyce Santiago said. “They’re very deserving.”

White was chosen for his selfless work to offer Twin Cities kids recreational outlets. He organizes a free kids fishing derby each year, an event that has drawn as many as 800 area kids. In addition to founding Y Not and Rockin’ With Santa, White has also been involved with a number of service organizations, and has coached in the community. “Someone on our board said forget Citizen of the Year, where’s sainthood,” Santiago said.

White said the honor was “very, very humbling.” He added, “This room is full of caregivers. To receive this award from the best caregivers in the Twin Cities is quite an honor.”

He thanked his wife Kate for her encouragement and help. “There’s an old saying, ‘behind every man is a good woman.’ I disagree,” White said. “My wife walks right beside me every day.”

Exchange Club member Rob Albert presented White with the Citizen of the Year award. “His mindset doesn’t even allow him to think of himself first,” Albert said. “The kids are always first in his life.”

Confer Plastics was recognized for emerging as a strengthened company in the face of a harsh economic climate. “The fact that they continue to find ways to grow in this economy is awesome,” Santiago said.

Two years ago when the recession began, the company was floundering, Confer Plastics Vice President Bob Confer, the grandson of founder Ray Confer, said in accepting the award. The company saw a 30 percent decline in production and was forced to reduce its schedule to a three- or four-day work week. “It was a little scary,” Confer said, adding that he spent plenty of time trying to rip his hair out figuring out how to steer the company through such difficult times.

“Fast forward to today,” he said, “I’m trying to rip my hair out because we’re at the other end of the spectrum. We’re as busy as could be. We went from one end of the spectrum to another over a two-year period.”

Confer said the company never would have succeeded were it not for the people who work for it. “We got hungry, we got aggressive,” he said. “We’re here today because of the people, and it’s been that way since Day One.”

Now, Confer Plastics has expanded to a year-round business that operates on a six-day schedule 24 hours a day.

“It’s a cool honor to have, and we’re always going to cherish it,” Confer said. In closing his remarks, he thanked his father Doug, who still works for the company, for being a good father and boss.

In addition to the awards, the Chamber’s dinner also included the installation of the 2010-2011 Board of Directors. Officers for the next year include: David Burgio, president; Nancy Schmidt, first vice president; Carl Hoover, second vice president; William Reece, treasurer; Joyce Santiago, secretary; and Rhonda Ried, immediate past president.

Former Tonawanda Mayor Alice Roth was honored for her quarter-century of service to the Chamber of Commerce.

The evening concluded with a recognition of the Tonawanda News. Santiago presented Publisher Peter Mio with a plaque for the newspaper’s help in getting the organization’s message out to the public by designing and printing the Chamber’s monthly newsletter and inserting it into the News.

The Chamber of Commerce of the Tonawandas has selected North Tonawanda’s Confer Plastics as the body’s annual Business of the Year. They will be honored at the chamber’s annual dinner Nov. 10 at Richard’s on Main restaurant and banquet facility, 561 Main Street, City of Tonawanda.

Confer Plastics, at 97 Witmer Road, was started in 1973 by Ray Confer at the Roblin Steel site before moving to its current home in 1986. Today the business is run by his son Doug and grandson Bob Confer and is even now adding jobs.

Bob Confer offered the News a tour of his massive 98,000 square foot factory packed with blow molding machines for a variety of goods — from wildly popular kayaks and sleds to kids toys, pool equipment and a massive number of other products sold at major retailers throughout the country and the world.

Eighteen members of the current workforce have remained with the firm for 18 years or more. While the company employed 110 machinists and other employees in April 2010, “next week we’ll be at 215,” Confer said.

His grandfather Ray bought a farm in Gasport (where the family still resides) after returning from military service during World War II, and dabbled in plastic chemistry before working for a couple like firms before using his farm earnings to open the company that continues to see growth in North Tonawanda.

Throughout the 1960s, Ray engineered uses for plastic that are downright legendary and familiar to most people today, such as the “living hinge” that involves a simple piece of crimped plastic used on millions of tool boxes, instead of interlocking hinges.

Today the range of products the company produces and ships for clients seems boundless.

“Any idea people bring to us,” Confer said of the custom goods the company fabricates.

“One thing that helps us a lot is our ability to make very large pieces — out competitors can’t really do that,” he said describing two new machines the firm jumped to acquire.

Other factors contributing to the company’s success, he said, are the elimination of some competitors that didn’t fare well through the recession, and major companies vying for market share since the financial meltdown who are producing new products aggressively.

Two big contracts Confer is now producing are the molded kayaks sold in places like Dick’s Sporting Goods and a new children’s castle set based on Disney’s Rapunzel that breaks down into a pint-sized table and chairs for sale for sale at mega-retailer Target.

About 130,000 units have already been ordered.

The company that sells the kayaks expects to increase volume of that product as well.

Challenges to doing business, he said, rest largely in the cost of electricity, which Confer — whose weekly opinions can be found in a column that appears Tuesdays in the Tonawanda News — said is equivalent to two villages of Middleport. But his location near the biggest Canadian and U.S. markets is a major plus.

“I would say a lot of (our success) comes down to the know-how of the employees,” Confer said. “There’s the fact that we can make the large parts, but it’s also the intellect.”

BLAST FROM THE PAST: THE LEG LOVER

Every once in a while we like to reflect on this blog about interesting items that we've manufactured over our 37 years of business.

Long-time Western New York residents may remember a Confer Plastics experiment of the late 1970s….the Leg Lover.

The Leg Lover was produced by CPI from 1977 to 1979 and sold through a Williamsville, NY company called Reclinet-te that was owned by Tom Gosch, Jack Gatke, and Confer Plastics founder Ray Confer.

The company – and the product – did not last too long as the marketing efforts were limited to the Buffalo-Niagara region. Commercials for the Leg Lover ran on TV channel 29 (WUTV).

This product could be used in any number of ways. It could prop up your legs when reclining in a chair. It could be used as a inclined back support when in bed or on the beach. You could even use it as a dinner "table" when eating in front of the TV. The possibilities were endless.

THE JOY OF OWNING A BUSINESS

Owning a business comes with a lot of risk. Just a few of the things that keep entrepreneurs up at night are: Will we survive the Recession? Will I have to layoff anyone and if so who? What can we do to retain and attract new customers? How much debt should we carry? How much credit should we extend to our clients? How do we beat our competition?

Those questions are the tip of the iceberg. There are many more to be asked and most remain unanswered for incredible lengths of time, gnawing at your gut and prematurely graying your hair.

Many people who don’t have an ownership role know this and ask, "Why would someone ever want to own a company?"

Well, despite all of the stresses and stressors that come with the responsibility, I wouldn’t want to live my life any other way. There’s something to be said about the philosophical and emotional rewards that come with being an active participant in our great free-market system, something that is made possible and best achieved in this great country of ours. The joys are a plenty, but they can all be boiled down to the American Dream being played out before my eyes.

It was the Dream of my Grandfather to start his own company and I take pride in extending to future generations what he and my dad begat. A creative man who toiled in the labs and factories of a fledgling plastics industry in the 1950s and 1960s, Grandfather wanted to break the bounds of conformity and have the freedom to develop new technologies and applications. So, he literally bet the farm on his endeavor and he and my dad started the company in 1973. In the years since, their American Dream has been realized, the company providing a means to think and act creatively and freely, manufacturing goods while providing a living for 170 families.

It’s rewarding to see those coworkers achieve their own American Dreams. Many of them work hard and save wisely, affording them the chance to, depending on what stage they are at in the lives, savor their personal pursuits and interests, buy their cars and homes, raise a family, help put their kids through college and tend to their grandchildren. Working diligently, they live an old fashioned American life, reaping the benefits of their efforts while not having everything handed to them by the government. It’s an awesome feeling to know that we’re a productive bunch of workers who live comfortably while actually making things, a true rarity in today’s service-and-government-heavy economy.

And it’s those things that we make that further our client’s version of the American Dream. It’s such a great feeling to think that someone came to us with something that was no more than an idea that we transformed into an honest-to-goodness object, like kayaks being enjoyed by a vacationing family or docks being used by armed forces to protect waterways the world over. Everywhere you look there may be something we designed, molded, assembled, and shipped. There’s a serious "wow factor" that comes with that, just as there is with thinking about how that product helped our client achieve his Dream while he, too, is employing people and helping them to achieve theirs…just as we are to our suppliers and vendors who are realizing their Dreams, too.

Owning a business comes with its heartaches (emotional and even physical), that’s for sure. But, above all, it can be exciting, exhilarating and totally rewarding. You end most days knowing you and your team accomplished something special. Nothing this side of getting married and having kids is as fulfilling as making a go at it and experiencing those constant victories – both large and small – that come with working with others to make your products or deliver your services.

If running your own company is something that’s always crossed your mind, do it…you won’t regret it!

CONFER HIRING SET-UP TECHNICIAN

Confer Plastics, Inc. has been growing by leaps and bounds over the past 12 months. With such growth comes the need for more technical personnel. CPI is now accepting applications for the position of set-up technician.

The set-up technician installs the molds and tooling into our 14 blow molding machines. After doing so, the technician must then "tune-in" the machine and ensure that it is creating quality product that meets specifications. Other jobs include general plant maintenance and repair tasks. Knowledge of blow molding processes; ability to perform manual labor; dexterity with, and knowledge of, tools; electrical/hydraulic experience are all preferred, as is a minimum of 3 years experience as a set-up or process technician in a plastics shop.

Positions are Full Time Permanent, Monday to Friday on our 1st Shift, 40+/hrs per Week.

Starting Wage is commensurate with experience.

CHRIS LEE TOURS CONFER PLASTICS

Congressman Chris Lee toured Confer Plastics on Monday, April 5th. After a tour of the facility, he and Doug & Bob Confer talked about issues which have impacted Confer Plastics' ability to expand and compete nationally and internationally.

Chris is a "rookie" in Washington, DC, this being his first term in Congress (or any public office for that matter). Prior to running for Congress he ran his family business, Enidine, which has 20 plants worldwide...so he is the rare elected official who thoroughly understands the issues that affect manufacturers.

His district, the NY 26th, covers a vast area of WNY that includes North Tonawanda, Amherst, Lockport, Batavia, Medina, Geneseo and Brockport. Pundits and politicians on both sides of the fence have commented on how good of a Congressman he is as he applies fiscal common sense and an across-the-aisle approach to everything he's done. Politico, Washington's newspaper, even named him the "Rookie of the Year".

He's been instrumental in improving airline safety and holding the FAA accountable for the flaws that led to the crash of 3407, he's led the charge for a WNY passport office, and he's been working closely with Delphi retirees.

The store, which opens on April 3rd, is the brainchild of Mark Andol who also owns and operates General Welding. Deeply affected by the mass exodus of manufacturing jobs from the USA, Mark has made good on his patriotic values through this store.

LEADERSHIP NIAGARA TOURS CPI

25 members of this year's Leadership Niagara class toured Confer Plastics on March 18th as a part of their Small Business Day. The participants were able to walk the factory floor and see products being made.

Leadership Niagara is a year-long leadership training program for adults who represent a cross section of Niagara County; including business, labor, education, the arts, religion, government, community based organizations, ethnic and minority groups.They meet for daylong sessions held each month addressing diverse, local needs. LN focuses on helping participants to enhance their understanding and recognition of what our community lacks to become a better place to live and work, followed by becoming involved and making it happen. The program provides opportunities for participants to develop their own personal leadership styles and networking opportunities.

BLAST FROM THE PAST: MARX SLEDS

Occasionally on this blog we reminisce about days gone by and look back at products we manufactured years ago. One such product is the sled we made for the Louis Marx Toy Company.

The one-time toy giant that was based in the United States contracted with us to make these popular blue sleds in the mid-1970s just prior to the Marx Company's 1978 collapse (after it had been in business since 1919). These sleds were sold by the thousands throughout the Northeast and could be found in stores like Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward's.

Many Generation Xers of colder climes remember riding on them and, surprisingly, many of their parents still have the sleds! They have held up to the test of time and 30 years later they can still hit the slopes. That's what you call quality manufacturing ;)

NORTH TONAWANDA MAYOR TOURS CPI

The new mayor of the City of North Tonawanda, Rob Ortt, toured Confer Plastics on February 17th as a part of his business & community outreach endeavor.

Rob and his team spoke with Bob Confer about the history and future of Confer Plastics. The Mayor was able to see the factory in operation, with items like kayaks, docks, and pool ladders in production.

Rob is a young mayor -- just 30 years of age -- who brings youth, drive and a positive attitude to the position which bodes well for North Tonawanda's future.

LYNC TOURS CONFER PLASTICS

Since 2001, LYNC (Leadership for the Youth of Niagara County) has brought together youth leaders – high school juniors and seniors - from diverse backgrounds throughout Niagara County for experiential leadership training and character development. Modeled after Leadership Niagara, LYNC is a program designed to equip youth leaders with essential skills and motivation to respond to the challenges facing our community. Students representing every school district in Niagara County participate in the program. The students participate in skill building sessions in diversity, communication, leadership, and personal performance.

LYNC toured Confer Plastics on Thursday as a part of their economy and business day in which they get a chance to experience how the world works. This was a real eye-opener as most kids have never seen how the products they consume are made. They also heard a speech from Bob Confer about the the trials and joys of running a small business.

A MESSAGE TO OUR CUSTOMERS (RE: PRICING)

The plastic materials market is in a very tenuous position.

Low domestic demand, a result of the recession, has forced many resin producers to tighten their belts and therefore their supply. At the same time, international demand has risen courtesy of the growing economies of China and India. To accommodate that shift in market dynamics, the big players in the chemicals industry have focused their efforts on satisfying overseas demand.

All of this led to domestic delivery issues over the course of 2009. Those problems will persist in 2010 and will probably grow in scale as producers actually shut down North American ethylene production facilities just as Dow recently did.

Based on the laws of supply and demand – more manufacturers vying for less material – the price of resin is scheduled to go up in excess of 24% in February and March. Other increases are in the works for the remainder of 2010. It may prove to be a period as volatile as 2007-2008 when material costs exceeded 90 cents a pound.

That said, Confer Plastics will have to revisit pricing throughout the year, even for those who have submitted blanket purchase orders or are hoping for fixed pricing through an entire marketing year. Confer Plastics will have to adjust our quoted prices to you on a regular basis and, depending on the severity and number of the spikes in resin costs, it may occur as often as every 45 days.

We will endeavor to achieve the best possible prices we can in an effort to minimize the financial impact to both you and Confer Plastics. But, please understand it won’t be an easy task. The plastics market was not healthy prior to the recession and with certain facets of the world’s economy becoming healthy the inherent weaknesses of the market will be realized again.

As the market puts out more feelers about the future I will be sure to keep you in the loop.

Confer Plastics, Inc. celebrates its 37th anniversary on January 22nd.

Confer Plastics was founded in 1973 by the late Ray Confer and his son Doug. The company invented the first plastic swimming pool ladder back in the 70’s. The company continues to manufacture pool ladders and steps and, about 10 years ago, Confer Plastics delved into the spa industry, manufacturing a line of spa steps, spa pads, gazebos, and patio furniture.

Confer Plastics also manufactures custom OEM goods, ranging from items as small as toner bottles to as large as kayaks. The company employs over140 people in its two facilities in the Niagara Falls, NY area.

Charlie joined us in 1989 and has served in a variety of roles from plant management to product management. For most of his time here he has been a jack-of-all-trades, and his primary responsibilities have been and are purchasing, custom product logistics, quoting, and custom client relations. To many of our clients, Charlie is the face of Confer Plastics (and what a face it is!).

EXPANSION UPDATE

Here's an update on our expansion. It's not a good one...

The most important part of the head, the hydraulic cylinder, was sent out for repair/rebuild to make sure this used machine was as-new. We received the quote this morning...the lead time is 16 to 18 weeks.

So, our 100-pound machine won't be running until mid-April.

The annual International Pool/Spa/Patio Expo will be held next week, November 16 to 18, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

For the first time in decades, Confer Plastics will NOT have a booth at this show. This is for a variety of reasons, the primary one being that it represents a very poor investment since Las Vegas has become a tired, under-attended destination for the Expo. Sadly, the Expo has become but a shell of its former self in terms of importance to the industry.

CONTAGIOUS ILLNESS POLICY

The outbreak of, and media hysteria associated with, the H1N1 swine flu has prompted many businesses to institute contagious illness policies to prevent the spread of the disease.

This is old hat to Confer Plastics. We have had such a policy in place for years. We strongly believe that outbreaks of illnesses (cold, flu, etc.) within a business are detrimental to the physical and financial health of coworkers, clients, and their families and such outbreaks must be prevented.

Our policy is as follows:

In a work environment such as ours where people are working in close proximity to others, preventing the spread of the common cold and influenza is key to maintaining a healthy - therefore productive - workforce. During the cold/flu season it is best that infected personnel stay at home to rest up and to protect their coworkers from contracting said illnesses. Therefore, please stay home if ill and bring with you a doctor’s note upon your return. Along those lines, if someone is deemed to be ill while on the job he/she will be sent home by their supervisor.

This practice applies to visitors as well. We cannot put our workforce and customers at risk and we ask, if not require, that all ill people stay away.
